Rather, this has now crept its way into the automotive world. There is only utility or performance. What happens if you want something that’s luxurious, but not ostentatious powerful, but not pop you in the face something that’s attractive without having to explain why it looks the way it does put another way: whatever happened to cars that were elegant Music, so the first stop on The road to elegance is not just how something looks: it’s, also how it performs, and in the automotive world. That would be the power in this case it’s blessed with a good amount of power, but not a ridiculous amount of power, and that comes from a unique 48 volt mild hybrid system, it’s. A combination of a three liter inline six and an integrated starter generator motor. That sits between the transmission and the engine now there’s, a couple of benefits to that which we have covered in many episodes, rather a bit of a recap. Here there is no accessory drive here. The electrical system, at least the main electrical system of the vehicle, comes off. The integrated starter generator motor. There is a backup, 12 volt electrical system. That runs some other bits, but most of the car is powered off the 48 volt electrical system, including an electric sort of supercharger. They technically call it a compressor, and what that does is force air into the turbocharger to reduce turbo lag now here’s, another more simple way of looking at the integrated starter generator motor.
It provides assist to the vehicle in situations that demand a lot of torque like accelerating from a standing stop, so it has its separate, torque and horsepower in this case 21 additional horsepower and 184 pound feet of torque and what’s interesting about that torque. It comes in as low as a hundred rpm. Now. How does that all work? Well, it goes to all four wheels. That is the only option in the e53 series. In this case it goes through a nine speed, torque converter, automatic now, fuel economy. You would think hey it’s a hybrid, then it has to have good fuel economy it’s, okay, at least for a pseudo amg it’s. 21. 28. 23 combined, but performance figures that’s something that’s interesting here. This is not a full fat amg, so it’s not going to rip your face off at like 3.2 seconds to 60., rather it’s 4.3 seconds to 60 and vmax 155 miles an hour. It may indeed be elegant, but it is certainly not lightweight 4429 pounds or depending on how you express your weights and measures 2009 kilograms with that sport plus oh wow, for an elegant car, it gets off the line rather quickly, but not really surprised here. That really is the rubber meeting the road of the electronic supercharger, forcing air into the turbocharger, so there’s minimal turbo lag here. You can clearly tell they set this car up different than other e class and again that’s what it’s trying to be so i can’t really fault it it’s good in terms of yes ride, quality and not disturbing the occupants, which again is the other currency of this Vehicle, however, when you try to push it around corners like this, you do get pitch, but not like straight pitch over to the side, rather it’s pitch out in the rear corners.
Now somewhat related to that something i find rather fascinating here. There is a good leash when it comes to all the safety doodads here when you put it in sport plus mode. It gives you more of a lease than other mercedes. At least mid range, mercedes amgs, and then there are the brakes. 14.6 inch. Diameter rotors in the front 14.2 in the rear, four piston calipers in the front so yeah. I call this thing like a middle of the road amg, but now they’re starting to realize they don’t like it. When i say that i i hope, someone’s paying attention to these episodes and that’s, why they’re starting to put better hardware in these things and here it’s, starting to move to that on a spectrum of like basic mercedes out to like real amg, say over here? It’S kind of in the middle of the road of the middle model, mercedes overall, i got to say something here. I expected this to be kind of a modern day boat and it really isn’t. I can have some fun driving it. I didn’t expect it to be. Rather fun to chuck around these turns, but i still get that feeling of driving something special when i’m down in the city or driving on like pch. Yes, it doesn’t need that time again to play your favorite game on the office game with today’s contestant a car. You and i do not get to experience very often these days, and that would be something that is elegant this one, the 2021 mercedes amg e53 coupe for base price of 76 250.
Did you honestly think elegance would come cheaply? If you did, you really got a shop coming, because we’ve got quite an options list to get through first up would be the color graphite, gray metallic it’s pretty, but if i’m looking for elegant, i would go with something different, especially at 720. Then the interior of the saddle, brown and black napa two tone: leather, it’s, lovely, but again, if i’m looking for elegance, i would probably choose something different, especially at 2990 and then, while we’re on the inside the carbon fiber trim. That is additional. I would not go with carbon fiber in an elegant car, but i can see why someone would want it, especially at two thousand eight hundred fifty dollars. Then they give you two hundred and fifty dollars back and it’s, not because you’re looking for something elegant. Rather, there is a chip shortage going on right now, so it’s literally idling plants like right now. Nissan has stopped making cars in the us because they don’t have enough chips. What other manufacturers are choosing to do is to not include certain items in a car like a heated steering wheel because they’re, like you, know what we want to build the cars we don’t want to sit on the inventory so we’re going to send it out without A heated steering wheel in this case you get 250 dollars back then the air balance package that’s the atomizer in the glove box – 350.
Quite a bargain, then another bargain is the 20 inch. Amg multi spoke with black accent. Wheels also comes with these summer tires for 950 dollars and also in the bargain department is the augmented virtual reality, navigation that is only 350, then the amg performance exhaust. I wouldn’t call this a bargain, but it’s necessary it’s not necessary for the usual reasons, because you and i we’re, broken car guys and gals. We want a car that sounds loud rather this engine. It has a very high pressure fuel delivery system, which makes it sound like a diesel engine when you stand outside of it now, i would argue one would want to mask the sound of a diesel because you’re not driving a diesel you’re driving an amg. So, at the end of the day, this is a bargain at 1 250 and we press on to the amg multi contour front seats with massage. I guess, if you want something elegant, you do need massage seats 950 and then something that really wouldn’t be a bargain. This is what a 76 000 car and they charge us an additional 450 for heated and vented seats. Then one of my favorite options, the head up display 1100. Then the dark, tint grille. I guess this would go into the whole color and trim elegance of the car 450 and then my favorite option you’re going to have an elegant vehicle. You need to back it up with the right sound system.
In this case, the high end version of the burmester 4 50. I would say that’s money well spent and we press on to something that i always tell you when this game is rather important with a mercedes. That is the driver’s assistance package, which is the level two autonomy in the vehicle. No, this is not a self driving car it’s, an adaptive cruise control system, that’ll keep a distance between you and the people in front of you, one thousand seven hundred dollars. Then the exterior lighting package, that is the led headlights that are adaptive, meaning they turn for nine hundred dollars, then the warmth and comfort package. After all, if it’s elegant, you want heated, armrests and faster heated seats for 800 didn’t, actually just pay an extra 450 for the heated seats, that’s quite a bit of money, and then we press on to the amg night package. I do not agree with this. This is an elegant car, not a full on amg. So why don’t we go with like a satin chrome finish. Instead of spending 750 to make the trim black, then the last option is the carbon fiber exterior package uh the mirror fairings the front of the car. The rear of the car for one thousand seven hundred fifty dollars of extra carbon fiber, then the only other thing we add, is the destination and handling von bremen deutschland for one thousand fifty dollars for a total suggested retail price of one hundred thousand one hundred sixty Dollars, so how did we start this episode again, something about being elegant? Well, with all those options we just discussed.
This is plenty elegant, but elegance is not just a lot of options or leather in different places or even the use of carbon, fiber or wood, and that in turn brings us to why this is a bit more special and a bit more elegant than other options. Number one yeah it’s got a screen out there, so it kind of checks that box for the kids that want tesla’s, but then it has some unique fit and finish with the materials that’s used in the vehicle. The contrast stitch throughout the vehicle, even the way the seats are in this vehicle are different than in the sedan, and then it all is kind of brought together with the glass roof which makes it feel more open and airy, but personal at the same time. Overall, take my hat off to the ux designers that worked obviously hand in hand with the color and trim people to make this stand out in a world where a lot of austere, interiors kind of like the pole, star too, i can see what they were going For with the polestar 2 and it’s a different kind of luxury, but at the end of the day it doesn’t say that is a 50 60 70 000 car. This on the inside yeah. To me it says: it’s, a hundred thousand dollar car is this. My kind of thing no does it mean i don’t like it? No am i smitten by it, yes, but not for the reasons that you are thinking so yeah there’s.
This whole theme we’ve covered throughout this episode about how this is elegant and how rare that is in today’s automotive world. Rather, the reason why i’m smitten by this it occupies a space in the car world that was once occupied by the cadillac eldorado now before you murder me here, just listen i’m, not talking about the abomination that was downsized in 1986, rather i’m. Talking golden age of cadillac, eldorado, 67, bill mitchell era. Think about what made that car special, an understated yet elegant, design, an understated interior and a lot of power that is what’s going on here, just optimized for today will it become a classic. I can’t really say that’s going to be the case, which brings us to the wish list, and here i don’t have anything specific about this car rather it’s about elegant coupes and the wish is s class, coupe and i’m, not talking about the one that came before It rather i’m talking something my back ass, not garish, with the two tone something that’s understated like this, but over the top in elegance, some opulence on the inside that’s, not just tech, but some design, details and then power. But like we said at the beginning of the episode, not poppy in the face power that’s, my wish list – and this is the point of the episode where i turn this around – to you – guys to opine in the comments below or via our social media, moto man, Tv all one word moto man, tv onward, facebook, twitter and instagram, and with that i do want to leave you with something personal.
That further explains why i’m smitten with these types of vehicles, you see growing up. I had probably the greatest aunt in the world and christine she lived in the boogie down bronx and she’s. Taking me up and down the henry hudson parkway in her pristine, 79 cadillac el dorado and hers was a very clean design. It was white, no vinyl roof and a saddle, leather interior. I felt it was like the most special car on the planet when i got to drive with ann christine, who was tough as nails, great sense of humor and taught me practically every curse word. I know in both english and in greek, so this is just a special kind of car to me and i also am incredibly grateful for the time i had with her and her exposing me to a different part of the car world.
