5 safety and fire tips for rc lipo Chargers – watts, dual, balance, ac/dc, safety and fires

Okay, the first thing you need to know about is the concept of ac and dc. You know some chargers are ac dc, some chargers are dc and what does that mean? So what it means is they either feed off direct, current or or a battery the output of a battery, or they feed off house current like this, you know what you see in your house, okay, so this is an example of a dc charger, so there’s no Way to plug your house in here, your house, plug and all you need to do – is put a battery source and it wakes it up, you’re in business. So this this battery is going to charge your your other batteries, so to speak, but obviously there’s a little too small. Okay, so dc chargers are cheaper, they’re, more powerful, because batteries are lipo. Battery sources have a lot more power than these transformers. So this is a dc ac to dc converter, so this is actually module design you could, you could stack them together and boom and then – and this will plug here so now you have an ac dc charger. Okay, but my other chargers dc ac. This one is ac, so it’s fairly common, now to have an ac dc charger, because everybody kind of needs ac right when you’re at the house that’s the most convenient source of power.
The second thing you need to know about is: does it charge one battery at a time or many batteries at a time? Okay, so this is a single charger. So right here is you’ll, usually see a balance port, and then this is where you you charge. The battery you feed the battery and this can charge one battery at a time. These two can charge two batteries, so they’re called dual chargers: single charger, dual charger, and this an interesting little charger is a quad charger. It can charge four batteries at a time. Okay and what why is that important in the perfect world, you want a dual charger or many dual char or many uh be able to charge many batteries at a time because it saves you time. Batteries are safest when you’re in the garage when you’re you’re in front of it, while they’re charging, usually a battery, takes about an hour to charge wouldn’t be nice. If, after your session, you have six batteries or four batteries, you’re charging them all at once. That way, you get it all done, you’re, either charging them or you’re either charging them you’re, putting them in storage, you’re doing it all at once, and with a charger like this, you could do four of them at a time. It all happens while you’re, while you’re in the garage cleaning up before you take a shower before you leave it overnight and whatnot, so single and multiple charger.
The third thing you need to know about is the concept of watts. So you’ll always see this number watts watts watts. You know what does that mean so 600 watts times 2 by 15, amp uh this one so you’ll see that 100 watts ac dc 200 watts and often you’ll hear number that’s higher in dc than ac. You know like, oh by the way, these are chargers too. This is a charger, and this is a charger usb chargers charge. How fast can it deliver current to a battery? So if you had, if you just have small batteries like this no problem, you don’t need a high power charger. But if you have big batteries like a like a six cell for your, your, your your armor, creighton or whatnot, you need a big, powerful charger to be able to charge it. You know in a in less than an hour to get the watts number. You multiply. Your battery uh the voltage times the the amps, how fast you wan na charge it. So if you have a 22 volt battery and you have a uh it’s, 10, 000 milliamps or 10 amps so 22 times 10 is 220 watts. So you want to charge that at 220 watts and these chargers can do it in an hour, and this one will take using ac 100 watts the two hours dc one hour. Okay and you’ll notice that a lot of chargers. They have more power, more watts when doing dc than ac, and the reason is you are constricted when you’re doing ac you’re constricted by your power inverter.
So this is a power inverter or adapter, so it converts house current into dc, and the size of this determines how much power you can deliver to the charger, as opposed to a big battery can deliver a lot of power to a charger if it’s used as A source so that’s the concept of watts in power, and if you have 100 watts – and you have a dual, then you only have 50 watts per channel. So the more dual quad charger. You have the more charge batteries you’re charging at one time, you’ll have to divvy up all your watts power, so the more watts, the better but more, if you’re, using big batteries and multiple charging at the same time. Okay, the next thing you want to find out is plugs. What are the native plugs of these chargers, and one thing that’s happening is a lot of them are now converting to xt60. So so this is an xt60. The old ones used to have deans as the default, and you want to get the charger with the native plugs to the batteries that you use. Here i made an elaborate video of all these things, but you want to use the plugs of the charger that are compatible with your battery, so you minimize adapters. Otherwise you can have adapters, not the end of the world and they make some nice ones now.
But if you don’t have to use adapters so much the better um and a lot of them now you can you you can plug in the balance port directly into the charger, so no need for a conversion board or or any of that funny business. You just plug it right in and boom very compact you’re in business. You only need these uh extension wires if it’s too tight. Sometimes the batteries have a a balance board that is so small that it’s very tight to get it in there. So it’s more for convenience, perhaps the last thing i’ll talk about is features all these chargers have different features and whatnot, but what you’re looking for is a auto charging or auto sensing, meaning as soon as you plug in your your battery Music wouldn’t. It be nice if the charger already knew what kind of battery you had and how many cells you had. So in the old chargers like this, this is called the classic four button charger. You have to tell it oh i’m, i’m using uh it’s a 3s or whatnot so but it’s prone to air. But if a charger already knows you have a battery and they base it off your balance board. You know they look at the balance sport as soon as you connect it and they say okay, i know you have a 4s. I know you have a 2s, and this is this is what we’re going to do so so that is a a very desirable feature.
Uh that that you, like one thing really cool as well, is the concept of regen charging, meaning uh regen, discharging meaning when you put a when you discharge a battery or you put it in storage mode. Usually that takes a long time right, because you’re taking power away and to take power away, you have to heat up a resistor and you have these powerful fans. You know just making a lot of noise cooling that resistor, but at most you could do it for uh, at a rate of about three amps as usual is the norm. But if you had a big battery there is a concept called core regen discharging or regen storage mode, where you’re taking the power out of your little battery and putting it back in your big battery, so you’re not wasting anything and it’s a much faster process. You can go up to 10 amps 15 amps when you do this.
