Hyundai Kia’s Smartphone App For Performance Tweaks: Smart or Stupid?
Everybody is aware of that on-board connectivity and distant telematics make electrical car possession enjoyable and simple. These techniques additionally convey with them some enjoyable perks too — corresponding to with the ability to defrost your automobile on a winter day with out going outdoors to manually scrape ice.
However as increasingly electrical automobiles hit the market we’re beginning to see increasingly methods by which automakers are attempting to provide themselves a aggressive edge in opposition to everybody else.
The newest? Hyundai Kia, which has mentioned that its automobiles sooner or later will include a companion smartphone app that permits you to tweak motor efficiency, accelerator response and extra out of your smartphone, basically duplicating what’s already potential within the car however remotely.
Issues like distant telematics to examine on state of cost appear to have a tangible profit in the true world. However Hyundai Kia’s newest growth appears overkill. In a future the place automobiles will not be owned however shared, the Korean firm says we’ll have the ability to customise fleet automobiles to our tastes earlier than we get in. However for now, is it good or silly?

Enestående. High insurance premiums on horizon.
But not to worry, as you can’t buy one of their full electric cars. It’s all very well being in possession of a bucket handle. But if you can’t lease/rent/own a bucket. What use is the handle?
I’m struggling to see what your concern is as if you don’t want it you won’t use it.
More interesting to me is how secure is the app to prevent malicious car setting changes.
Setting your car to "anemic turtle" mode when your teenager is to borrow it. Even if you get a call from your teen asking to please borrow the car whilst you're at work you can still NERF it with the app from your desk.
Thanks Nikki, another great episode. I just bought a Ioniq myself about a week ago and am loving the EV experience. Noticed many of those screens you showed must be from the Kona as my Ioniq doesn't have them, maybe in future with a software update perhaps.
My electric pedal assist bicycle is high tech enough for me.
I like this idea personally.
hope to see it in the facelift Kia e-Niro coming soon.
Why should the engineers not come up with an app like this while waiting out the battery shortage? I mean having or needing an app for your car is already one more nuisance that can send push messages to your screen and beep at you. So if there is a sub menu for the tech savvy in there how does this impede with the preferences of other users? It is a non issue if done right. And if the driving experience will get ever closer between brands since everyone will be using similar motors and acceleration will mostly be limited by the tires at lower speeds, I would rather pick up a car which lets me disable the obnoxious faked forward creep.
I think cell phones should run the entire car. Without the right cell phone plugged in the car is just a hunk of metal.
Whilst I am sure that this sort of technology will be eagerly awaited by some, I think it is another aspect of an ongoing problem preventing the wide adoption of EVs. Far too much time and money is being put into issues that are not essential to EV transition. The vast majority of drivers do not really need to tweek performance settings with a mobile phone, they do not need ludicrous top speed and acceleration times and they do not need autonomy. The growth of EV ownership would be better served by manufacturers concentrating on affordability, availability, Vifte, simple standard charging technology, safety and comfort. The present level of technology on the Kona EV is plenty for the majority of drivers, and probably too complicated for some. It seemed to be heading in the right direction for most but is being let down on affordability and AVAILABILITY, and the rubbish, over complicated charging infrastructure.
One recent review suggested that a particular car needed the driver to use a mobile phone to unlock it. How completely stupid is that? I am certain that the vast majority of people would not want to fiddle with a mobile phone just to get into their car.
Whilst it is appropriate to applaud technical innovation and development, I think that you are right to express caution about implementation when we need to focus more on encouraging the wider adoption of EVs.
Enestående, for multiple driver family, each can have their preferred set-up.
Not available in the uk ☹️
It's always better to have options than not and who cares what Luddites think. They're not on the market for one of these cars anyway and even if they were they wouldn't have to use the app.
Cool! Now where can I buy one in the Midwest… Anyone?
I just went out on a test drive of the Kona EV. I find it insulting that the advertised gadget are not included on the base model but for 7k (cdn) you will get them . This new apps should cost 1k more. Car makers have found the way to make money on ev's
I know a Volt owner who loves her car but had no idea that there was a Hold mode (among other things) available on the Mode button. Så, Ja, many people will never need or want this functionality. I agree that I would play with the functions until I got what I like and then leave it there for the life of the car.
telemetrics' been there for umtenth yrs, just need to buy an odbc cable or dongle. user upgradable fw is good but not 100% sure abt ota, for security reasons.
Brilliant to get more access to the settings. Even better would be if they opened up the protocol so we could use it from whatever bits of software were convenient. All these things are settings in the controller anyway – it's very tiresome that most manufacturers don't let you see them or adjust them. It's often infuriating that the fancy tech in your car has setting you don't quite like (like cruise control that accelerates too hard to keep up) with no way to adjust it to how you actually want it.
Hyundai already make the world's most desirable EV – this is just cake-icing. Pity you can't actually buy on e of the damn things (and that they don't do a van).
Looks like one of those gadgets which seem to be a brilliant idea, but end up at the back of the cupboard cos you can't be arsed to use them more than once. A bit like a sandwich toaster….!
The proposed European speed limiting regulations in 2022 for all new cars should put dampener on any ideas of performance on the public roads.
The ability to customize the response of the car based on an app is excellent, it opens up the possibility of having the car adjust automatically to the user based on the device used to unlock/access the vehicle etc. Imaging lending your unrestricted P100D with ludicrous mode to your 19 year old son… (scary)
If you can set things up to automatically adjust stuff to different drivers' sizes and driving styles without having to go into 5 menus then it would be useful.
Whatever happened to KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid)? Why does it seem that everything needs an app these days?
Smart
Reminds me ANDROID for geeks….. APPLE for simple intuitive use….. Guess which these examples refer to in EV world 🤔
I guess this would be useful for a family car used by 4 different family members. I’m not so sure I see it as useful for ‘shared rental cars’ since for it to be useful that way would presume that H/K was the predominant make of the whole fleet of shared cars. This seems less likely until their EVs are among the more inexpensive, and likely bassis of a fleet of shared cars.
I was going to go to the store and buy some of the suggested swag, but from you website it is IMPOSSIBLE to find any link to a store. Top navigation bar link might be helpful? Or maybe I'm blind.
It the best new idea, id use it all the time, old people probably not, and if you think this idea is complex buy a toyota corolla or don't use it.
There are already electric vehicles that have no connectivity or very limited connectivity and yet the number one selling electric vehicle is the Tesla model 3, even though is more expensive, consumers want all of that connectivity and hi-tech. So OEM have to come up with all sorts of gimmicks to justify the higher price tag for an EV. There are no real ecomies of scale yet that can reduce costs of EVs.
Min 2019 Jaguar I-Pace recognizes me and my profile by the key fob and my smartphone. So multiple people sharing the key can have different preferences saved under their own profile.
As an avid viewer of your output I would welcome your response to this study. https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/04/20190420-cesifo.html
I do realise it is not the first time that EVs have been compared unfavourably to ICE cars for CO2 output…….but should this study give us pause or are there, as I suspect, some flawed assumptions in this study.
On the face of it the study appears to be independent and produced by well-qualified individuals.
Keep It Simple!!!!
Why change the characteristics? I would always have it in high performance 😎 useless function!
Great for kids, who were brought up on computers, but they havn't got the money to buy electric cars. Meanwhile the cars produced are getting too complicated for average owners.
I would be happy if e-Niro has any app. Maybe in 1-2 years on European market. At the moment I am driving a Leaf and I need the app to see the charging level on a public charger. Also nice to see the statistical data and to preheat it if necessary. If you get an e-Niro now, when, then you have no telemetric Hardware in it to use a App later on.
I vote for "Stupid". I despise all of this "smart" crap, to the point where it almost makes me want to stay with ICE vehicles… almost. I don't own a "smart phone" and never plan to. Just another way to invite in surveillance and all sorts of unwanted attention. This is why I have reserved a Bollinger B1… not because I necessarily want or need a serious 4×4, but because it is simple and low-tech. Why can't there be more vehicles like that?!
It creates another way to gain access to the cars controls for good or bad.
Here's how we know if it's smart or not. Is Tesla already doing it? Then it's very smart indeed!
I would much prefer my Leaf screen was an extension of my phone for satnav, media, Osv.,
Well done to the Koreans 👍
This is a grest innovation! It will allow you to set your preferences from car to car, which is amazing. I would like to hear you talkimg about this app if it was for Teslas!
I don't think that this adds a particularly thick layer of complexity relative to a basic "eco/city/performance" or similar choice most cars have. It just exposes functionality that is already there – adding "custom" presets to those already there.
I think the way to go (with any technology, not only electric cars) is to make reasonable default behavior for most users, but never forget "nerds", if you will (Eller, more charitably, "power users"). How many people have Bluetooth adapter stuck into their car's OBD port? Jeg har.
I understand your point, but me being a tech geek, i think it's good. Who doesn't, just don't use it.
I’m sure it will be fine. Adding more ways to access a car’s control systems can only be a good thing, … surely??
"that the motor is set up to maximum range rather than maximum performance"
Excuse me, but maximum range ====== maximum performance. What is the difference? Performance = achieved result(aka range) / spent resources (aka full accumulator charge).
I wouldn't understand what settings mean unless the dealer takes time to explain – which I am not sure the sales person even understands
It does not seam you “need” to use the app, it’s just there if you want it. It still drives just fine without it. I’m not sure this could ever be considered a negative.
The App could be used for people that want to lend their car to a friend or child and set the certain power output so they don't cause an accident or something similar.
The ability to increase/ decrease torque is good. To be able to reduce torque when in wet or icy conditions will make driving safer. Also with the enhance acceleration with electric cars an ability to reduce that will make driving in traffic less stressful. The ability to remotely control charging and preconditioning would be near as would be an alarm when your vehicle has reached the desired charge level, good when public charging and you have nipped off to get a coffee.
What a pointless video! A new feature may not be used by everyone and it may not be intuitive. … Ja … Og? When has anyone ever complained about getting a new capability that they can choose to use or not as they see fit? ….. until now that is.
