Evolution is a five person team based in melbourne’s clayton south. It began its life in 2015 as an ev charging infrastructure specialist but started converting classic internal combustion engine cars into electric cars in 2019 y desde entonces, business has been booming. So we’re going to head inside to meet the team, get an idea of what the conversion process entails, find out what customers can expect and get a sneak peek at some of their most exciting projects. Come with me, i’m russell from evolution, i’m director hi i’m. Emma i’m, a director of the electric car, cafe it’s the workshop at evolution, australia and we convert classic and specialist vehicles well 2015., and it was an audi a3, which was my own personal car, so it’s six so far with another seven in progress at the moment. Generally speaking, it’s anything that’s cool that’s, the that’s that’s pretty much the prerequisite yeah. Is it cool, uh and and um. Those who were watching this and we’ll probably have there. In their own mind, what cool is uh, but essentially, if it’s cool, then then yes, vamos a, convert it because um you’re, essentially not over capitalizing on the vehicle, si es, relatively modern and um soulless, then possibly not because at the end of the conversion process, the vehicle Won’T be worth what’s being spent on it, essentially the vehicles working on all cool, but essentially series land, rovers range, rover, classics, holden, ej, we’re on with the moment, Música.
Obviamente, the delorean and also tidal land cruiser, which is in progress too we’ve, got a also got a subaru brumby that will be coming to us in july, which is it’s going to be really interesting, es, not the type of vehicle that i would have ever picked. We’D be converting, but when you look into the history of the brumby it’s, actually quite an iconic little aussie aussie car and then there’s an mg in the mix there as well for later in the year Music. So this is blossom. Blossom is a graduate electronic engineer at evolution blossom. A lot of people are going to recognize the car we’re standing next to. Can you tell me what it is of course, so this is our new clients car. This is the delorean, so we have it in for converting it from petrol to electric and then, if you come over here, we have the petrol drive unit over here, which is going to be replaced with the electric drive unit, and we have the tesla drive unit, Which will be going into that place and we want to keep the design as original as possible. así que, wherever the f, where the fuel tank in intake is that’s, where we’re going to place the charge point and then with the brakes and suspension, we want to make sure that the additional weight that we’re, adding with the batteries and the drive unit we want to Make sure that it’s compatible – and it can take because right now, it’s designed for this car with the petrol unit, so that’s all good.
So we have to calibrate it for our new electric unit, and this is where we are at at the design stage right now. So from there on we’ll work on with the further process of what needs to be done and how much longer do you think it will take to get this car to where it needs to be so we’re, giving an approximate two to three months to get it? Nice and smooth from a to b point, so i think that that’s, where we’ll be fantastic, so people should keep an eye out for this on the streets of melbourne. Our customer is very much interested to give everybody a ride in it. The team is also fast tracking, the restoration and conversion of this classic range rover vogue as a special request from a terminally ill. Customer we’ve worked up a really good process where, when people first come to us, the first point of contact is me and – and i lay layout for them exactly how we work um and i give them some indicative prices because that’s obviously always the first question. What range can i get? How much will that cost and um uh? So the first thing we do is we sit down with the clients and either face to face or virtually and and we actually work through an engineering plan. So the engineering plan, depending on how many questions come up, you know it can be a five or six meeting process so that can often take you know up to a month to actually bed everything down and make sure everybody’s happy with what the high level design Will be, but from there uh it’s around a three to four month process from go to.
Woe typically 150 is the is the is the minimum 150 Para 200 that kind of thing up to about the 500 Marca, but then we can augment with you know, dc fast charging too. So that means that the customer may not have as big a battery as they would expect, but the charging times a lot less. So that means they can go on on a road trip of sorts people always come in with. I want a thousand kilometers and then, when we say well tell us what you do on a daily basis and actually they need 34, kilometers and um and so that’s, where we always start and we work. We work down from there, pero es. También, i mean that process. The engineering plan process is about letting the client get to know us as well, por lo que es, making sure they’re comfortable with us and – y ya sabes, vice versa – that um, we know we can all work together well and we end up setting up whatsapp chats with all The clients and we conflict them through little photos of what’s happening, so it becomes a bit of a a beautiful friendship Laughter. We currently have projects in hand ranging from about 65 000 up to about 120 000 um and it yeah it. The range, the the battery capacity that we’re putting in really dictates the the cost. Some of these vehicles are from you know, 1960s 1970s and some of the creature comforts leave a lot to be desired so as to the safety components as well.
So we typically slip stream such things as proximity locks into the vehicle. So you as any modern vehicle toyota crawler, you can typically just walk up to it, put your hand on the handle and walk in that’s what we do with a lot of these vehicles as well, and similarly we typically upgrade the suspension and brakes and one of The one of the cars were actually introducing abs when it was never had abs, previously at all uh and then also signed. You know things like side impact production bars and so on, y así sucesivamente. Música, all right so i’m, here with jack pearson, who’s the general manager of operations and sales at evolution jack. What do we have here behind us and who is it for all righty? We have an atv. It was previews of polaris with a diesel motor and they also call them side by side commonly used for farming and rural purposes. Our customer dod department of defense. They have brought it in for us to convert it to electric, so they had. They have a need to reduce the heat signature and the noise of one of these and to look at deploying and they came to us to convert it, put batteries in it and see if we can achieve their goals, and what about this is so unique. I suppose the unique properties of this is the customer wanted the wheels to be driven independently for redundancy purposes, Música, so we’re a bit further back in the workshop now and we’ve got a tesla here, that’s seen better days.
How did this one come into your care? We keep an eye out for teslas and and crashed cars. We’Ve got a broken leaf outside as well, so we repurpose and and reuse the the parts out of these vehicles. So we strip them down, take the battery packs and the motors out, and we put them into our conversions. So they go to live another life in another vehicle and and make it make an old car more modern, this this isn’t source from any car. But this is a an ac motor, a hyperline motor that we put in a lot of our conversions, such as the range rovers land, rovers and land cruisers, etc uh. Sin embargo, what we also do is get a lot of queries, por ejemplo, with the delorean the customers ask for a tesla driveline, which is what we’ve got here flavor of the month, but we do repurpose the parts out of salvaged vehicles. We strip these down, pull the battery packs out, take the motors out of them and give them another life. Every vehicle that we convert is supplied with a public charging pack, so a type 2 tattoo cable, a type 2 to type 1 Cable. Sorry this is technical, but we’ll get into it. Also a my ng zappy, which is the product that we we know and love, um and it’s, a product which allows you to only charge your car from excess solar from your home, which is a really cool feature.
Creo que es, the only one on the market that can actually do that at the moment, uh and then also um, where you supply with obviously with a portable charger. They call an occasional charge. You can plug into any any any power outlet it’s a mixture of actually using new parts. We try and upcycle recycle as much as we can so, por ejemplo, the the delorean and the and the land cruiser will end up with tesla components um, so that obviously offers a certain amount of performance which we all all love uh and then, on top of That we obviously saw some new components from overseas from the likes of the various companies in california. Around canada, oh don’t die yeah don’t, a top tip top tip top 10. um, so yeah don’t die. The voltages are incredibly can be incredibly high and i’ve. Seen percy simpson, seeing some scary stuff on social media engage an engineer. Do it do a heap of research and choose convert the car that you want to be seen in and you want to drive so there you have it your peak behind the proverbial curtain of australia’s, exciting, electric car conversion industry, if you’re interested in converting your own Car head to the evolution website and in case you weren’t paying attention, maybe don’t try this at home thanks for watching.
