These things are just incredible at everything, but here’s the thing these aren’t new anymore after thousands of kilometers in in this case six years of use, are they still worthy of their perfect car reputation? What goes wrong with them? What do they like to live with every day? What do they cost to own and maintain, and most importantly, should you buy one let’s find out before we get deep into the golf gti? Please do us a favor and hit those like subscribe and bell icon buttons and hey. Why not go and follow us on all the socials as well Music. Now the golf gti debuted way back in 1975.. This car, in particular, es un 2015 Marca 7 performance and look in this video. We will be focusing on the australian variants of the 2014 Para 2020 Marca 7 Y 7.5 golf gdis, but if you’re not from australia, don’t fret, because everything will be going over, should relate to gdi’s in your local market. Now the performance basically filled the price and equipment gap between the standard gti and the golf r for the extra cash you received. A host of cosmetic upgrades, larger and far more red brakes borrowed from the golf r, more power and, lo más importante, a very clever electronically. Controlled diff, which we’ll get to later on and also, as you’ve, probably already noticed, this gti performance isn’t exactly standard. It has been lowered, it’s on some very sexy aftermarket wheels and it has a front splitter.
Now the mark 7 gti received an update in 2017, which most people call the mark. 7.5 and we’ve received a whole host of special and limited editions, and we can’t go into every graphic detail of every variant in this video because it’ll just take far too long. But we have grabbed all that information and we put it in our handy re driven cheat sheets. Our cheat sheets are invaluable, as they provide a full breakdown of the car’s model range it’s common problems. What you need to look out for, before you hand over your hard earned cash, how much of that cash! You should be handing over and so much more check it out in the link below so how’s. The exterior well look subjective stuff. Primero, i think the gti is one of those very rare cars that just suits every scenario. Perfectly i’ve, seen these things, hammering around race circuits and then pulling up outside the classiest of restaurants, and it looks completely at home in both situations. But as far as quality goes, there can be a few problems, starting with the boot handle, because this is the door handle for the boot. What happens water can collect in here and it’s supposed to drain out through this little hole, but the problem is that little grommet is starting to deteriorate and basically water fills up in the boot and can cause all sorts of issues it’s a pretty easy fix, but Just disappointing next up is the bonnet release, cable and the bonnet release handle these are both starting to deteriorate and therefore fail and they’re bloody annoying to fix early mark 7 golfs with sunroofs had an issue where these plastic rain gutters would crack letting water leak into The car, Desafortunadamente, to fix that you’ve got to take the entire roof lining out to repair it.
Volkswagen did fix it on later model gti’s, but if the gto you’re looking at has a sunroof make sure you check that out could be disastrous. Speaking of water leaking into the car, there are a few reports of water leaking into the door cavities and coming out through the bottom of the speaker, grille filling up the footwell with water, rather than pouring out the drainage holes in the bottoms of the doors it’s. Pretty easily fixed but again it’s just disappointing. It happens at all pop the bonnet and make sure that all the engine bay plastics match and just look for any signs of dodgy repair work. Ahora, because these are a front wheel, drive performance car if they’re driven badly, they have a tendency to understeer into people’s front yards. así que, as far as damage goes, make sure that all the panel gaps around the front of the panel gaps everywhere, but especially around the front of the car, make sure they all match perfectly and while you’re at it make sure to check that all the paint. Not only in color but in consistency and texture matches all over the car as good as many panel beaters are. They can never match the quality of a robot, así que sí. This front section make sure that hasn’t been plowed into your neighbor’s front yard, check to make sure that the wheels aren’t damaged and have no gutter rash, because the standard rims aren’t that cheap to replace and beautiful aftermarket jobbies like these are pretty expensive as well.
Also try and get under the car as much as you can or feel under here to see if the undercarriage has had any arguments with speed, humps or if it’s been abused on a rally stage, even though these are pretty common problems, this particular car has suffered From none of those issues, which means there are some great examples out there, but just yeah make sure you check: Bien, how’s, el interior. Bien, like the exterior from a design and subjective point of view, i think it’s spot on it’s. This perfect balance between sporty and classy. Some people think it’s a bit too conservative but they’re wrong. I think this is fantastic. The seats are delicious, son, supportive, yet comfortable. personalmente, i love the tartan finish on like the standard seats. This has the optional leather. There were some optional sport seats available as well. These are just the standard ones, but even the stand ones are fantastic. Bien, wear and tear first up the leather aging in here really well, this is this guy’s daily driver and the leather is exceptionally good. Bien, the steering wheel getting a bit shiny, the gear, selector here’s, a few little marks and cracks on that, pero sí, the actual leather, superb. Also the seating position like this is a performance car and you can get the seat nice and low. The steering wheel is super adjustable and i love yeah. I love the seating position in these it just it just feels hunkered down and purposeful bloody love it all.
The switch gear still feels really nice, no dramas with that. Oh it made a bonk at me. Bien, there we go um. One thing this grab handle just a little squeaky like i know this is this is a tiny, tiny problem but that’s about that’s, honestly about the only problem that i could find in here. Everything else is pretty much banging on. Oh also another thing he has fitted optional, like brushed aluminium, paddle shifters. I think they look great. They match all the silver in the steering wheel. If you’ve got a gdi, make sure you get these aftermarket pedal shifters because they yeah look very cool now. As far as issues go, we do know of a few reports where the locking mechanisms in the doors seem to create a mind of their own and they just lock and unlock, sporadically and completely randomly this car hasn’t suffered from that. Pero sí. There are a few reports of that happening. También, we know of reports where the gauges, the lighting either turns on or off, or the entire gauge cluster just completely fails again. This car hasn’t suffered from that, pero sí es, something to watch out for okay, the back seat. Look if you’ve watched any of our videos before you might be aware by now that i’m six foot two this is in my driving position and the room’s okay. My knees are kind of scrubbing against the seat here, but it’s pretty spacious up top, like the glass house is quite nice, es que es, a es, a hatchback it’s, a good amount of room.
As far as wear and tear goes, the guy that owns this car has kids and you’d never tell like again. The leather is in excellent condition. All the interior trim here, Fantástico, no major squeaks from the door handles bloody, good how’s, the tech well, cuando funciona. Es, okay again, this car hasn’t suffered from this problem, but we do know of many reports where the entire infotainment system can just fail. When things are working, you get a decent amount of phone connectivity with bluetooth and apple carplay. It does have sat nav but it’s, not the most intuitive to use. There are loads of driver aids which are all listed in our cheat sheets and there are five drive modes but we’ll get to those later on as far as actually using the infotainment system. Look this car is from 2015, so this is starting to feel a little bit old and cumbersome and the resolution of the screen isn’t quite that amazing, but with every generation of gt oil, every update of gdi. This system improved every single time so, depending on which gto you get just check out the infotainment system, this one it’s okay, is it practical? Bien, the great thing about buying a hot hatch is that you’re getting a performance car with all the practicality of a standard? Hatchback and the gti, with its 380 liters of boot, space it’s, pretty it’s, pretty comfy back here, plus you get a 12 volt power outlet and these seats they fold flat.
Practicality in the back is pretty good. You’Ve got some matte pockets here. You’Ve got excellent size door bins with carpet, so it keeps the battery hands all nice and warm. There is an armrest here with cupholders which are actually adjustable so it’s almost like it sounds like you’re playing with legos in the back, but that’s pretty handy. También, you can access the boot from here to make sure that anyone, you’ve abducted, is nice and safe and cozy and practicality up front heaps of it. Here we go there’s storage up here for your sunnies or sunglasses, if you’re not from australia clothes. Damn you there’s storage in here, which is perfectly sized for a phone, hides away, really really nicely there’s storage here, where the phone fits really snugly on top of the cup holders and unlike the audi sq5, which the link is up here, it’s really easy to pick. Your phone up, Además, when you have the cup holders visible. The phone also sits just snugly like that and again really easy to get to if you’re determined to live in the mid 1800s there’s, a perfectly sized spot for a box of matches under the seats you’ve got kid little drawers here got a really good size, glove Box you’ve got a spot down here for your coin purse, excellent size door, bins which are carpeted so when you grab your water it’s, just nice and cozy on the back of your hands and in the center console storage here and also more storage down there.
So much storage, excellent Music, so is the gti mechanically sound. Is the german engineering all it stacked up to be well i’m? Not a mechanic so i’m not qualified to answer those questions, but jim is a mechanic here’s jim! You know what this is. This is a water pump out of a golf gti if you’re lucky it’ll last you about 60 000, k’s i’ve seen them fail with as little as 40, 000, k’s and here’s a fun fact. This is a non genuine. One we’ve found that in some cases the non genuine ones seem to be outlasting, the genuine ones. Así que tenlo en cuenta, if you have one and you need to replace one other than that, what else goes wrong with a golf gti there’s plenty, the later model ones are having less problems with their dsgs, but they’re still having problems they’re still having turbo problems. They’Re having inlet tracked problems they’re having injector problems, they’ve still got feeble engine bay plastics, which just don’t last the electronics and computer stuff is better than it used to be, but still have problems, and then you’ve got labor costs because there’s a lot of stuff. In that engine bay and it’s crammed in there and stuff breaks, es, complicated and expensive to repair, and if you are looking at one of course make sure it’s got a good service. History, remember they’re a performance, car and people’s daily drivers, so things are going to go wrong.
Is it safe? Sí, very safe? The gti was awarded a five star end cap safety rating and is loaded with safety, tech like driver fatigue, detection, multi collision, braking systems and all of the familiar features like abs, stability, control and multiple airbags. Otra vez, all the details are in our cheat Music sheets, so what’s it like to drive well, do you want the good news or the bad news? Primero, Oh, the good news. I can’t you pick for bad news kind of person, um it’s great around town. The extremities are really easy to judge it’s a golf hatchback, so it’s super simple, around town it’s, easy to park, it’s easy to maneuver in and out of traffic great around town. También, if you want to have some fun with it, planning that right foot just unleashes a whole different character of card. This thing is properly fast. The brakes feel more confident than the standard, gti there’s, more progression to the feel of them, and they just yeah i’ve. Just got a bit more confidence to the middle pedal, or in this case the left pedal power is nothing without traction, and this front diff makes all the difference. You can just jump on the power early. It rips you around the corner with most front wheel, drive powerful front wheel, drive hatchbacks that don’t have a diff you’ve got to wait till you apply the power, otherwise it just runs wide and wheel spins everywhere. But this thing just grips up and rips you out.
Brilliant now to the drive modes, you’ve got eco comfort, normal sport and individual. personalmente, sport does it for me: individual obviously can customize whatever you want. Eco and comfort like this is a performance car they’re, just it’s what’s the point of those keep it in sport. You’Ll love it in sport. This thing in sport is the way to go. The one thing i will give to comfort is that comfort suspension does soak up our horrible aussie roads a whole lot better than sport, but i still think sport’s more fun. También, this car has been lowered a bit, but it doesn’t feel that different in say spring rate to the normal height gti performance feels great. As far as sounds go. The exhaust note is really nice it’s, not too drony in here. I love all the whistles and pops that the the turbo system and wastegate and all that makes it’s a little bit artificial, but still a bit of fun. Bien, any rattles or creeks like how’s. The wear and tear nothing we’ve been over some rough roads, and this thing just feels tight, no creeks, no rattles, no squeaks excellent. Now to the bad news: Bien, the gearbox look when you’re up it for the rent and having some fun. The dsg gearbox is fantastic, but just when you’re around town, like coming out of reverse, like or coming out of a driveway it’s, just a bit clunky and jittery and bit of hesitation between you know, gear changes and just getting you up and running.
Not the end of the world, i know i’m being very critical, but it’s just not not smooth. Mira. The standard gti from a driving aspect has never really done it for me and even versus this, a civic type, r or a renault mcgann rs have sharper tools when it comes to driver engagement. But this thing with the diff and all the extras it’s such a good package Music here in australia, 20 grand will get you into a standard gti with loads of kilometers and probably loads of issues, and pricing tops out at nearly 60 thousand dollars for say a 2020 tcr a gti performance like this will range anywhere from the high 20s to even the high 30s, which means it’s actually held its value really really well, especially for a european car. Bien hecho. Volkswagen’S claimed fuel economy is 6.6 liters per 100 Kilómetros, but that is being very optimistic because even before we did the enthusiastic driving stuff, we were seeing figures closer to 10.. Volkswagen changed from a three year: unlimited kilometer warranty to a five year. Unlimited kilometer warranty on the first of october 2018 and that’s good news because it means many of these gto’s still have some factory support, left on them and there’s. Desafortunadamente, a good chance you’re going to need that servicing is recommended at every 12 months or 15. 000. K’S and as jim alluded to parts and labor can get pretty bloody expensive, pretty bloody quickly.
También, we recommend fitting some pretty serious performance tyres because these things come alive and they’ve got some sticky boots on so should you buy one? Bien, look i’m going to be honest about something the standard gti. It just frustrates me it’s, so incredibly good at everything it actually. It bores me it’s a bit meh, but this performance variant. It turns the wick up just enough to give it some actual personality and if it was as simple as that, Claro, we’d recommend buying one but we’ve genuinely lost count of how many horror stories we’ve heard. Regarding the mark 7 golf gti, interiors leaking engines imploding. Catastrophic and hugely expensive failures are becoming almost common. Míralo. Por aquí, it’s almost like dating a wealthy professional model that does charity work on the weekends, but occasionally they stab you in the neck and steal all your money and just throw it in the ocean. If you’re, okay with that level of stress and impending doom – and you can find one of these with low kilometers, a full service history in brilliant condition – Sí, Bien, Sí, entonces sí – you should get one. But if you want a completely reliable and dependable hot hatch, that’s going to give you years and years of trouble free performance and practical driving, even when it’s out of warranty, No, you shouldn’t buy one of these sorry. Me encanta, but no. Thank you so much for watching and hey what do you think of the gti? Let us know in the comments section below, did we miss anything?
