The Fastest 'Cheap' RC Car you can buy! Brushless WLToys 144001 Speed Build Part 1

For you banger contacted me and said phil: do you want another one, Quatro, Quatro: Zero: zero one and a brushless combo. Do you wan na make it the one they didn’t say that i contacted banggood and said: do you fancy sending me another one and a brushless combo to make it fast and they’re like yeah we’ll? Send you one. So this is from banggood the brushless combo we’re. Talking about that um, a banger have sent that as well. I’Ve supplied some metal gears, i’ve also supplied some foam wheels and tires, and i’ve also got a nice fat body that’s what she said. So then, a brushless wl toys build now. Like i mentioned i’ve already, i’ve already got a one. Four four zero zero one and mine has been through the wars. A bit it’s definitely had a good run: 3s, 2s still on the stock, esc and motor. I know some of you don’t have much luck with yours and but still all stock and still runs. Although he’s a little bit sandy from when we went to the beach, so i’ve still got one doing a speed build. I wanted a fresh chassis to start with, and so we’ve got a new one here now there’s quite a few speed runs i’ve seen of these uh on youtube and i think the fastest i’ve seen is just over 100 mile, an hour i’m not going to try And get to and that’d be nice to get to that sort of speed, but i want to set myself more of a achievable speed and what i’m going to do my fastest ever car is a ta04 tamiya that i got up to 78 mile an hour.

So my goal is to get this to over 78. I think it’s achievable. I don’t know if it’s achievable with this sat we’ve got here, but i’m gon na have fun trying and in this build i’m gon na strip, all the old parts out get all the new stuff fitted, and if i get a chance, i really want to take It for a quick test runner, however, the weather is really at the moment in the uk, so i can’t guarantee anything, but if we can we’re going to take it out for a quick shake down on 2s, but i think to achieve my um 78 mile an Hour plus we’re gon na probably have to go 3s anyway, i’m going to get the w toys out the box, then we’re going to have a look at the motor and esc setup and we’ll talk about what we’re gon na do with the body and stuff. So this isn’t an unboxing and a review because i’ve already done one of them, i’ve already done a couple of running videos. I’Ve done a custom, video and i’ve done a 3s video. A beach run. Anything like that. So if you want to see them, like i’ve said, i have made a playlist check out that playlist it’s got every video with the one four four zero zero one, and i massively massively rate these now. Looking at this one straight out of the box, it’s slightly different, i didn’t know that slightly different to the original one.

This is the very first one. The strut towers are a different color. Now that to me means the chassis is the same color but the um. The strut towers are more of a brushed alloy, whereas the original ones are gold. So whether they’ve strengthened them because the weak point on these they’d bend, you could bend them back, wasn’t a problem but just looks slightly different but yeah. So not an unboxing we’re, literally going to get straight in and strip it down and get all the old parts off and then we’re going to talk about the bits we’re going to put on uh funny thing. When i got this, i opened it and i was like there’s no live pay with it it’s, because it’s wrapped on to the transmitter. This is the new version with the bigger battery the 550 motor and these zaps, the lipo it’s, really short runtime, whereas they now supply it with 2 600 milliamp hour lipo much better, and this is going to be good for our shakedown reason. I’Ve got fat bodies and that’s the same as what all the other people that use these i’ve seen it’s, because you get slightly more room underneath um for the esc, so you’ve got a little bit more. Obviamente, it’s gon na do it’s not gon na be as um aerodynamic, but if i put it low enough, it shouldn’t make a big difference and i’ve done that in a really nice bright red color, i’m gon na talk about that in a minute and but we’re Going to put that to one side, because we don’t need that i have got a different, spoiler we’ll.

Try that in a minute and just a quick look in here, just looking at the difference between the two, so i’ve heard people having issues with the esc’s. Now the esc’s are slightly different. If you look at that one and look around here where the led is just around this area – that’s the old one, if you look at the new one, i mean we’ve got a sticker on it, there’s also a little red like reset button, so the esc is Slightly different, and that might be why people are having issues with these esc’s frying and i’ve not had an issue with mine it’s, because they’re actually slightly different. So before i strip this out, let’s just have a quick look at the motor. Este é um 3650. So a 540 size can slightly smaller than the 550 it’s already fitted and it’s 5000 200 kv decent amount of speed, it’s a gt what’s it. I think that says: sky 10 rc anyway, uh there’s links to all this. In the description, 5200 kv. Motor i’ve got a funny feeling that this isn’t going to fit may have underestimated the size of the esc, that’s a bit big um 120 amp esc surface hobby yeah uh takes 3s and 2s i’m, not sure it’s going to fit uh if it doesn’t fit. I think hang on a minute, so i have got a backup. This is a just a cheap. I don’t think it’s got a.

Eu acho: it’s unbranded it’s a cheap 120 Amp, esc 120 amp esc’s. I think i know which is probably going to be the better one yeah, but we might have to just risk it with this one for a bit. If this, if it smokes this one, we may have to try and get this one fitted or at least get another one anyway. If we can’t get it fit to the w toys, i will be sure to put it in something and make it go fast. Yeah let’s put them to the side and then let’s get this stripped down: Music motor and center shaft and uh gears out now so the diffs in this uh are metal. I think they’re made they’re quite cheap. I think it’s uh is it powdered metal? I can’t call it anyway: the buggy has got all uh bearings on it, so that’s always a bonus, and this is better than plastic, whether it’s a bit soft or not anyway. The gearing i’ve got, is just a better quality or harder metal. I think that’s is that an alloy opinion i don’t know, mas de qualquer maneira, it’s the same gearing exactly saying, gearing just metal, so we’re gon na get that fitted uh. Obviamente, we’re gon na swap the motor over get the nice get the nice brushless one in there and get it back together. Then we’re gon na look at what we’re going to do with the uh esc. Hmm uh we’ll cross that bridge.

When we get to it right, we may have an issue that grub screw looks like it’s been rounded off and i’m, not even touched it, oh brilliant Music, so that took a lot longer than it should have done really. As you saw an issue getting the pinion off and then the screws for the old motor had to heat them up and when i got it in uh, when i put the body on the cable sat at the top was just making it pretty much impossible. So we had to twist that round and then i realized that it’s got a five wire servo in it, so i then have to scavenge around for the correct size. Three wire and i’ve actually found a pretty decent all metal, one that i had for one of my wpl’s nice and fast. I think it’s three and a half kilos plenty for this and i’ll show you that when we get it fired up in a minute, but anyway we’re all on obviously with metal gears, it’s gon na uh be a little bit noisy, but still it’s. All on there. Now prepare to laugh, although i’ve already done this, i think but there’s the uh there’s the esc. Bem, that is definitely not going on there. We’Re going to use this on a different, build i’ll find something else to do. A brush is conversion on you’ve got any ideas. É. 120. Amps the same as this half the size. I have seen a few people have had issues with them catching fire, but i think that’s due to trying to draw too much current for them, whereas i think 2s. We should be right. I think before i stick a 3s through this. Definitely we need to rethink the esc, but i think it should be alright. 2S on these escs. If you do buy one they’re really cheap, i think it’s like 15 or something, but they don’t come with uh connectors. On the end, so i soldered some bullet connectors on for my motor, so i’m gon na get this fitted in uh we’re gon na i’m gon na put a bit of charge in the battery and then we’ll just give it a quick test. A bigger battery that fits in the extended tray you can extend the tray on this. No entanto, they haven’t put a strap in there that’s long enough to go all the way around. So this, although it will feed through it, doesn’t, actually go far enough around to fit this in so i’m, either going to find a strap that i’ve got or i’m just going to put some velcro in and velcro the battery in, but we’ll do that before we Take it out for a run. We don’t need to do that now, right, esc, on tidy all the wiring up and then it’s time to switch it on and give it a run before.

We then put the foams on and actually take it out right that took some serious work um to get that fitted in there a little bit cable management uh all squeezes in and now i understand why people put like a little like the little extension plates on The side to add their extra batteries and esc, because that is a tight fit and i don’t get the body on yet it kind of fits. I got ta fiddle about of it, mas de qualquer maneira, apart from the wheels we’re ready to give it his first fire up using the uh gt5 fly, sky it’s got a gyro in it, so that may help can always switch it off. We don’t need it so let’s plug it in obviously, just on a 2s. You can see the steering really nice and quick, but it’s also got a decent amount of torque it’s. Realmente, the wrong way around let’s, reverse it um right, vamos, see how we get on. Should we feels nice, nice and smooth right, vamos, see if uh see if these tyres can take just 2s for this brushless? That has got some serious power we’re only running 2s, so i’m planning on running this 3s. If we can, but that thing looks like it’s gon na rip right, let’s get the wheels on let’s, somehow get the body on and uh let’s take it out for its first run: Music Music. So here we are first test on 2s uh we’re all ready got the gps strapped on underneath there it’s behind the wing best place for it.

Uh i’ve set the dual rate down to 30 for the steering we’ve got the uh we’ve got the gyro on and set to 15, just as a small amount of gyro input to just try and keep it steady and let’s give it its first run on 2s Shouldn’T be too bad on this surface. It is a bit dusty, pretty straight. I might need to do the trim a little bit, but let’s give it a first pass, try and ease it in slowly. Eu acho, for the first time, don’t want to go flat out too soon. Unless we can. OKEY, we can nice that is really really planted. It sounds so nice, so smooth very nice. I thought that metal gears would be quite noisy but right, another pass. Oh, eu não tenho, i always have problems with signal up there. Está bem, let’s bring it back, see what speed we got. Aplausos. Na verdade, it actually feels like yeah that isn’t actually flat out. I wonder if it here this is not playing ball. 52 milhas por hora. What 52 mile an hour, i am well impressed that is 2x the switch off and then on again, because i think the esc might have gone into like a limp mode if it’s overheating 52 mile an hour that is not bad stock gear. Remember it’s, just the motor um and the esc, that’s brushless. Obviamente, we’ve got the metal gear in but it’s stock gears and then that 2s lipo anyway 52 to beat yeah.

It definitely goes into like a limp mode: Applause that esc doesn’t like the the power. As long as it’s, not on fire, oh it’s been a bit slow today. What are you doing? 51? I think that’s, all we’re, going to get i’m going to give it a couple more passes handles really. Bem, Embora, we do a couple more passes, so so we have a 52 mile, an hour run there. It keeps jumping in and out of that mode, so you’re right, vamos, just give it a run round now see what the handling’s, like. Obviamente, we know what the top speed is like, but interested to see what it’s like uh with them: phones on i’m impressed with 50 mile an hour right there, é, nice and smooth as well foams grip really well. I need to turn the jewel rate on the steering up that might help that’s better, Oh sim, what a monster! I know a lot of people don’t like this 144 platform, but i really like it fast handles really well, and these foams make a massive difference same as what i said on my tamiya video. If you’ve watched that stick foam, if you’ve never had foams before definitely worth putting them on just to see the difference in handling, you have hardly any traction issues when you’re. Turning with the phones and obviously you don’t have the ballooning issue either right anyway, let’s bring it in well i’d say that first run was a success 52 mile an hour what a beast – and i think it looks really nice of them – foams as well.

You can see the gyro work in there as i turn it, but yeah, then foams make a massive difference: nice little wing on there. I found that i don’t know it’s off but um. I found it that fits nicely overall. What a really nice little truck there’s a link for everything in the description everything i fit into this and the truck and the wheels the whole lot i’ll link it all in the description and look out for the 3s run and let’s go for 70 plus mile. An hour – and i think, that’s doable with this without changing the gear in 52 on 2s. I definitely think we’ve got 70 plus on 3s and then we need to start looking at gearing and stuff.
